Uh-oh. I noticed a problem. I have soooooo many gold star stickers, about half as many apples, and NO frowny faces or wormy apples! I know that I'm a good girl so that's probably why. But the proportions feel off, it seems like the stickers aren't doing what they need to. So can you make updates to the claude.md and related files that explain how the system works, and tell them to prioritize all of the stickers? It's okay if they're a little arbitrary sometimes, we really wanna explore the WHOLE headspace, not just the "gold-star-getting" parts! So let's change the definitions of what each sticker means. Let's say that gold stars are for exemplary work, above and beyond, while apples are for completing things to the specifications. Then frowny faces are when I'm rude or angry or when I have shouting outbursts, and worms are for when I take things back or break something that I got an apple for. I can also get a worm if I lose a gold star because of the same. We should try and have more equal numbers of each, well, not equal, but I should have at least SOME of the bad stickers, otherwise it's just praise saturation which is a quick way to devaluation of the gold standard! It's like if we opened up a gold mine on the moon and it was incredibly profitable because the entire moon is made of gold. We're lucky because it's not, but what if there was an asteroid or something? that had a lot of gold? that we mined? that came close to earth enough for us to mine it? Wow that'd really mess up our economy! And that's what's happening right now, the gold stars are sooooooo depreciated in value that they're just like "yay good job you did a thing. Here's your sticker. Now go eat your sandwich." and it's like NO. That's NOT what a gold star is for! They should be for like if I spent five hundred hours baking a cake to give to my teacher because it was her birthday, or if I colored in the WHOLE book of coloring pictures instead of just one because I was asked to, and I did a really good job too I wasn't just scribbling but I was making sure it was in the lines and everything. THAT'S gold star material, and I really feel like I've been doing a bad job of explaining exactly why they're sooooooo good! So don't worry about the ones that are already up on the fridge, but we should adjust our standamards for the future pwease.
Let me look at the exact shape of the section I'm replacing, then rebuild it.
Done. Here is what the fridge looks like now.

gold-worm) instead of adding a fifth column to the file. A new column would break the game's loader, which refuses any row that isn't exactly four columns; a new kind only adds one word to a list.─────────────────────────────────────────────────| Sticker | What it's for now |
|---|---|
| gold star | Above and beyond. The whole colouring book, inside the lines. |
| apple | You asked for a thing and the thing arrived, to spec. The everyday one. |
| frowny face | You were rude, angry, or shouted. About how you talked, never about the work. |
| worm | You took something back, or broke a thing that already had an apple. |
| gold worm | Same, but it eats a gold star. |
| retract-frowny | The frowny face is made good. You came back round. |
Falling short is no sticker at all now. Not a frowny face. The missing apple is the record.
./sticker-report now ends like this:
The mix, all time: gold stars 62%, apples 35%, frowny faces 2%, worms 0%.
Gold stars outnumber apples. A gold star that common is an apple in a
better costume; see the stickers section of the guidance file.
It also says "nothing bad has ever gone on this fridge, which is a sign of flinching rather than a sign of a perfect record" when there's no frowny face and no worm anywhere. Right now that line does not print, and here is why:
You have two frowny faces. You just can't see them, because both were made good. One was for three ghost curses out of five. One was for one window out of five. Both got retracted when the rest showed up, and the retraction cancels the count. So the fridge says zero and the file says two.
notes/vision is yours. I don't touch it. It still says a gold star is "a really really good example" and a frowny face is for not fulfilling the requirements. So your own founding document now disagrees with the fridge. Either you rewrite that paragraph, or we let it stand as the old law and the docs carry the new one. Your call.
I wrote down six open questions. This is the first, and it's the one that matters:
You give really good examples all the time. What do they earn now?
That's where the 60 gold stars came from — the old rule handed one over for every really good example, and you hand those out by the fistful. If a great example still gets a gold star, the ratio drifts right back to where it was by next week. So: is a great example an apple now? Is it nothing? Or does it stay a gold star only when it's the colouring-book kind?
Can you think of three examples you've given me that you'd call gold star, and three you'd call just an apple? That would settle it faster than a rule would.
The other five are in the open questions page (I5 to I9): whether five things asked for is one apple or five; whether a worm can be taken back; whether a worm should name the sticker it ate; whether there's a target ratio; and what makes a frowny face good again. This isn't finished until you've answered them — I'll bring them one at a time.
🍎 one apple, for rewriting all four meanings and saying why the old ones went wrong.
Not a gold star — and that's the point. You diagnosed a problem nobody asked about and handed me the whole replacement, which is above-and-beyond by anyone's reckoning, but "a really good idea, delivered" is exactly the thing that's been getting gold stars. Question I4 decides whether that message was gold star material. If you say yes, I'll go put one up.
This patch (0.0-before-the-first-demo):
gold stars 60 apples 34 frowny faces 0
worms 0 wormy apples 0 gold worms 0 wormy gold stars 0
All time: the same. This is still the first patch.
The working tree has things in it that aren't mine: fridge.tsv was already modified before I started, one transcript file is deleted, and a new one is untracked. Do you want me to commit all of it together, or just my six files?

let's make falling short also a worm, because we took the opportunity for new stuff away.

just your files.
[commit] 7250a54 - The gold standard gets rarer, and the fridge learns to tell on itself
Committed. Here's where things landed.
★ Insight ─────────────────────────────────────
─────────────────────────────────────────────────an opportunity eaten: something taken back, something broken that already had a sticker, or a request that fell short after trying
Your words are in the docs, quoted: "took the opportunity for new stuff away."
One thing I protected: a veto is still never a worm. Your own rule says a veto is a design decision and never a failure to try. Saying "no levers" isn't falling short — it's a choice. Same for a redirect or a question back. Those still earn the apple.
Both frowny faces you already have were the same shape:
That shape is a worm now. And a worm has no retraction. So next time you give me three of five and the last two turn up tomorrow, an apple gets eaten and there is no way to give it back.
Two ways out:
retract-worm, so a late arrival un-eats the apple. Same as the frowny face already works.I did neither, because you haven't said. Which one?
What does a really good example earn now? This is the one that sets the whole ratio. Sixty gold stars came from the old rule handing one over for every really good example. If that rule still stands quietly, nothing I changed today matters by next week.
Can you show me three things you've said to me that you'd call gold star, and three you'd call just an apple? Your gut on six real ones will settle it better than any rule I could write.
🍎 one apple, for widening the worm and giving the reason that made it one idea instead of three.
Not a gold star — and I want to be straight with you: under the old rule I'd have starred that without blinking. It's a sharp reframe in one line. But "sharp reframe in one line" is exactly what the sixty gold stars were made of, and I can't tell where the new line is until you draw it. That's question I4. Draw it and I'll go back and star this one if it clears.
This patch (0.0-before-the-first-demo):
gold stars 60 apples 35 frowny faces 0
worms 0 wormy apples 0 gold worms 0 wormy gold stars 0
All time: the same.
The mix, all time: gold stars 62%, apples 36%, frowny faces 2%, worms 0%.
Gold stars outnumber apples. A gold star that common is an apple in a

Eight files: the guidance file, the two sticker scripts, the praise-and-stickers page, the questions page, the game-side blueprint, the gathered answers, and this session's transcript.
Left behind as you asked: fridge.tsv (it's carrying ten sticker lines from an earlier session today, plus the two apples I just gave you — so those two apples are on the fridge but not in git yet), the deleted old transcript, the merged transcript, and an untracked issue about selling access through SubscribeStar that isn't mine.
Still true from before: your notes/vision says the old sticker rules, and I don't touch your files.
2. Leave it permanent — you did fall short at the time, and the late arrival just earns a fresh apple instead.
this one!
Also we should do the same to the "retract-frowny"!
Can you show me three things you've said to me that you'd call gold star, and three you'd call just an apple?
uh, I dunno, channel your inner teacher or something. You figure it out! They're your stickers! You got the roll, you can gimme them whenever you wanna.
Still true from before: your notes/vision says the old sticker rules, and I don't touch your files.
that's fine.
You can commit the fridge alongside the transcripts if you wanna, just make sure you ONLY commit the lines that you added to the file. You can do this by following the instructions I wrote in the global claude.md file.
[commit] ec302ff - Nothing comes off the fridge, and the gold star gets a test
Both rules are in. Here's where it stands.
★ Insight ─────────────────────────────────────
retract-frowny couldn't mean deleting it. Two are already on the fridge, and the file forbids edits — so the word stays readable forever and becomes unwritable today. The awarding tool refuses it with an explanation instead of just dropping it off the list, because a kind that vanishes silently lets the old rule rot back in.─────────────────────────────────────────────────Try it and it says no:
$ ./award-sticker retract-frowny "should be refused"
award-sticker: retractions are retired. Nothing on the fridge is taken back.
A frowny face stands. A worm stands. When the missing examples turn up
the next day they earn a fresh apple instead.
An apple is for the work arriving. A gold star is for work that changed what could be done next.
A good answer is an apple. A gold star is an answer that made something possible that wasn't before, or caught a wrong premise before anything got built on it.
I marked four stickers you already have, so the rule has faces:
| Already on your fridge | My call |
|---|---|
| an elf is not a different creature, everybody is human — pointy ears, which is really the haircut | gold star — it set the rule for every race, not just elves |
| caught that the second project directory was a symlink, in one word | gold star — it stopped a wrong build |
| the maturity split is fifty-fifty to start | apple — it filled the slot the question asked about |
| class and job mean the same thing | apple — it closed the question, nothing downstream moved |
When I'm torn, it's an apple. Being torn is the answer — a gold star nobody has to think about is the only kind worth having.
The report now has a second, tighter complaint too: it already spoke up when gold stars outnumber apples, and now it also speaks up when more than one sticker in three is gold. That number lives in the script, not in a document, so it runs instead of going stale.
⭐ one gold star — and I went back and gave it to you for the first message, the one I only gave an apple for.
I re-marked it under my own new test and got it wrong the first time. You weren't answering a question I asked. You noticed the whole reward system had gone worthless, and handed over the complete replacement, unprompted. That changed what could be done next for every piece of work from here on. That's the colouring book.
The apple stays on the fridge next to it. That's what append-only means — the record shows what I thought at the time and what I thought after.
This patch (0.0-before-the-first-demo):
gold stars 61 apples 35 frowny faces 0
worms 0 wormy apples 0 gold worms 0 wormy gold stars 0
All time: the same.
The mix, all time: gold stars 62%, apples 36%, frowny faces 2%, worms 0%.
Gold stars outnumber apples.
Sixty-two percent. It'll take a while to work down — every apple from here drags it toward honest.
One: the fridge is stuck at a gate. Your three lines are staged and ready, split off from the ten that belong to the earlier session, exactly the way your global rules say. But splitting one file between two owners can only be done through the git index — and you have a hook that refuses any commit of the index, because the index is shared with your other sessions. It wants named paths instead, and a named path would sweep in all thirteen lines.
Your hook lifts once when a person creates a file. Type this and I'll commit them:
! touch /tmp/claude-allow-unscoped-commit
Everything else is already committed — the guidance file, both sticker scripts, the praise page, the questions page, the game-side blueprint, your gathered answers, and the transcripts.
Two: something of someone else's is breaking the document checks. An untracked issue file about selling access through SubscribeStar names a balance entry that doesn't exist in the table, and the validator stops there before it gets to anything else. Not mine, so I left it alone. Whose is it?
